11: THE WOMAN WHO COOKS FOR CRANKS
To
be a vegetarian is still considered a brave decision. The
number one question asked of a meat free human is “Do
you miss bacon?”
Curious
carnivors might even follow up with an observation that all
veggie cooking looks like brown mush.
Going
out can also be a problem because the vegetarian option on
most menus if fairly limited. In the 60’s the UK’s
first vegetarian restaurant was opened in London’s Carnaby
Street. Back then people considered them to be mad so naturally
they called the place Cranks. Now there is only one Cranks
restaurant remaining and that is in Darlington.
But
it is in the home where the influence of Cranks has found
a footing and that is thanks to the enormous success of their
recipe books. In most vegetarian kitchens you will find The
Cranks Bible.
According
to reviews on Amazon’s web site the author is a culinary
genius.
Her name
is Nadine Abensur and she recently talked to us about cooking
for a meat free life but first we wanted to know how it all
began...
